Kodiaks announce final Mucho Burrito Athletes of the Week
The Kodiaks are proud to announce their final Mucho Burrito Athletes of the Week.
March 19, 2020 - With the ACAC competition calendar abruptly coming to a half due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kodiaks would like to take the opportunity to place a spotlight on some of the outstanding athletic performances from the final two weeks of the Kodiaks athletic calendar. A special thank you to Mucho Burrito for sponsoring the Athlete of the Week award all season long!
March 2-7
Indoor Track: Cooper Cheshire and Janelle Graham
This dynamic pair shone brightly at the ACAC Grand Prix #2 event in Red Deer on March 7, in what turned out to be the final event of the season due to the unfortunate cancellation of the 2020 ACAC Indoor Track championships.
Men's Basketball: Brock Dewsbery
The heart and soul of the Kodiaks 20-1 men's basketball team overcame great adversity to deliver an outstanding ACAC championships performance. Despite having a tooth nearly knocked out in the Kodiaks disappointing opening round loss against NAIT, the south division Rookie of the Year and ACAC Player of the Year rebounded by leading the Kodiaks to back-to-back wins over host Augustana and then Red Deer to cap a remarkable season. He was named a first team ACAC tournament all-star and was also named a CCAA All-Canadian.
Women's Basketball: Natalie Hoyt
The ACAC south division rookie of the year was an absolute force for the Kodiaks during the 2020 ACAC Championships, especially during a tense quarterfinal match in which the Kodiaks nearly toppled eventual champion Lakeland College in which Hoyt dropped 13 points and collected three assists.
March 9-14
Men's Volleyball: Carter Hansen
The ACAC all-time kills leader shone brightly on the national stage, leading the Kodiaks to a fourth place finish at CCAA Nationals in New Brunswick. He was named a First Team Tournament All-Star, helping the Kodiaks rebound and reach the bronze medal game despite losing a tough five-set match to Sherbrooke in their opening game. He was on fire in the bronze semi-final against Red Deer College, helping his team extract revenge on the Kings in a memorable five-set win. He finishes his ACAC career as one of the greatest Kodiaks men's volleyball players of all time, having completely re-written the Kodiaks record book and helping the program reach new heights.
Women's Basketball: Kirsten Barwegen
This heart and soul player deserves a major shout out as she was named to the ACAC First Team All-Conference, and unfortuantely didn't get proper recognition due to a technical error at the ACAC Women's Basketball Championship Banquet. Barwegen's offensive tenacity, attention to detail, strong work ethic and fierce defence helped her team put on a magical second half run that secured a playoff spot in the competitive ACAC south division.
