Kodiaks Peer Mentorship Program
(if viewing on phone: zoom out to view the following information)
Help fellow Kodiaks succeed in their first year at Lethbridge College!
What you need to know and do:
· You will be invited to attend three one-hour events each semester.
· The time commitment, outside of those events, is expected to be one hour a week for both the mentor and mentee.
· Mentorship pairings can be made from any athletic team. It is our aim to match student athletes based on the academic program they are registered in.
Why should you apply?
· Share your knowledge: As a mentor, this is a great opportunity to share your experiences with someone who may be struggling.
· Build your resume: This opportunity is a great way to be recognized as a leader on campus and would look great on a future resume.
· Extra perks: Swag, recognition, and social events.
· It’s also a great way to make connections and lasting relationships.
How to apply:
For mentors: If you are interested in becoming a Kodiak Peer Mentor on campus, please fill out the following Kodiaks Peer Mentor Application Form:
*Please note that to become a Kodiak Peer Mentor, you must be at least in your second year of study at Lethbridge College.
For mentees: If you are interested in becoming a Kodiak Peer Mentee on campus, please fill out the following Kodiaks Peer Mentee Application Form:
Overview: First-year students often face academic and social challenges when transitioning to post secondary education. Peer mentorship will help create a supportive community and ease the transition into college. The program will match first-year students with an experienced student mentor. The relationship will be formalized through a program agreement and check-ins. |
|
Access and Inclusion: By building a peer mentorship community, we hope to increase the amount of student support available, ultimately making the overall student experience less stressful and more enjoyable! There will be one to two optional social events/gatherings planned for all participants (mentors/mentees) to attend. |
||||||
Roles and responsibilities: A mentor's role includes investing one hour per week to either meet or check in with their assigned mentee(s). A mentee will be expected to respond to their mentor and engage in interactions set out by the mentor or program coordinators.
|
|
Mentor/Mentee Orientation: Mentors and mentees will come together for a one-hour session at the beginning of the Fall semester to meet and go over program requirements and expectations. Goal setting, meeting expectations (i.e. communication preferences, meeting times/frequency, etc.) will be discussed. |
||||||
Eligibility: To become a mentor, you must be at least in your second year at LC and have the time (one hour per week) to grow a mentoring relationship. All new incoming Kodiak athletes in the Fall semester will be given the opportunity to be matched with a mentor or to opt-out. It is our goal to make mentor/mentee pairings based off of the program you are enrolled in. |
|
Mentor Training: Training will be both in-person (orientation session) and asynchronously online. Following the initial orientation, you will have one month to complete an additional hour of online training. This will include topics like getting to know LC services, boundary setting, and professionalism. |
||||||
Assessment: At the end of the program, as a mentor, you will have developed your leadership, communication and professionalism skills. In addition to the inherent satisfaction you will have gained from helping your fellow students, you will receive student core competency badges that you can add to your resume. You will be recognized for your achievements and contribution with swag, gift cards, professional development opportunities, and recognition events. |
|
Timeline and Implementation: Apply to become a Peer Mentor in the Fall semester by August. To apply you must fill out a brief application form (five minutes) that will be sent to your LC email address.
