Sept. 25, 2019 - The Kodiaks cross country teams faced a unique test last Saturday, as they headed south of the border to compete against NCAA competition at the Montana State Classic in Bozeman.
Reigning Canadian college champion Sophia Nowicki continued her strong season, cracking the top 20 to finish 19th, less than 50 seconds behind the podium finishers and ahead of many NCAA runners in the field of 55. The Kodiaks women’s team finished in sixth place.
The Kodiaks men’s team also placed sixth in the event. Connor Jackson set a new personal best as he cracked the top 50, finishing in 46th place.
Head coach Simon Schaerz said the focus this weekend was to expose his athletes to a level of competition they typically don’t see north of the border.
“This event was a great opportunity to see how they stack up against athletes from the NCAA,” said Schaerz. “Sophia continued her strong season with a top 20 finish, ahead of many NCAA runners. Vildana Rekic also had a breakout event, finishing with a new personal best. We’ll take the lessons learned from this weekend into next weekend’s event.”
The Kodiaks are at SAIT for an ACAC Grand Prix event next Saturday.
