Jan. 28, 2020 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks indoor track team kicked off a new season with an encouraging debut last Saturday in Edmonton.
The team hit the podium early and often, snagging six medals at the first ACAC Grand Prix event of the year hosted by MacEwan University at the Kinsmen Fieldhouse.
On the women's side, Jasmin Salmon (3rd year, Corrections) made an impressive indoor track debut, earning a pair of bronze medals in both the 600m and 1,000m events.
Salmon, who has starred for the Kodiaks soccer and futsal teams over the last two years, will compete in both indoor track and futsal this winter along with her teammate Christine Moser.
Also earning a spot on the podium was Millie Stafford (1st year, Exercise Science), as she earned a bronze in the 300m race. The women’s team also earned a silver in the 4x400m relay, helping the team to an overall third place finish.
“The women’s team looks very strong this year,” says Schaerz. “The addition of Millie Stafford and Jasmin Salmon add depth to our speed events.”
On the men’s side, multi-sport athlete James Marriner made a memorable first impression, finishing third in the 300m. Marriner (1st year, Business Administration) also competes for the Kodiaks men’s volleyball team, proving his quickness translates from the court to the track.
Cooper Cheshire (2nd year, Agricultural Enterprise Management) rounded out the medaling for the men, as he finished third in the 3,000m.
Schaerz was encouraged by the men’s performance, as they finished fourth in the overall standings, just three points back of third-place Concordia
“The men had an incredibly good start to the ACAC Indoor Track season, finishing only three points off the podium,” says Schaerz. “I’m particularly excited about James Marriner and Cooper Cheshire’s podium finishes in the 300m and 3000m, respectively. Keep an eye on these athletes over the course of the season.”
The Kodiaks will now have over a month to train between events, as their next action is Mar. 7 in Red Deer.
