MBB | Card impresses in rookie semester
Kodiaks newcomer Adyn Card has made a positive first impression on his coaches and teammates during the fall semester.
Dec. 22, 2020 – Even without Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference games to be played this season, Kodiaks newcomer Adyn Card has made a positive first impression on his coaches and teammates during the fall semester.
A local product from Cardston High School, the 6’3 forward wasted no opportunity to make an impact during the team’s limited practices and scrimmages over the past few months. His offensive touch and work ethic has Kodiaks men’s basketball head coach Ryan Heggie excited for what the future will bring.
“Adyn is a versatile basketball player. He can score many ways, whether it be from the perimeter, attacking the rim or with his back to the basket. He’s also a heads-up passer,” says Heggie. “Positionally he can play shooting guard, small forward or the power forward position, giving us good offensive depth and versatility.”
Above all, Heggie says Card’s attitude fits in perfectly with the team culture he’s trying to build.
“He was coached well at Cardston High School, which isn’t a surprise. Adyn has a good attitude, is coachable and respectful. He’s willing to take advice from older players which is a sign of respecting the process of college basketball. He’ll use the rest of this season to get in great shape which will also increase his foot speed and quickness, then he’ll be ready to go for next year.”
Even with the season being cancelled, Card says he’s looking forward to learning from the team veterans and soaking up as much knowledge as possible.
“I came to Lethbridge College because I wanted to come to a place where I can develop my game to the point of making it to the next level,” says Card. “For me it’s all about work ethic. I want to work on my game as much as possible here.”
When asked to compare his game to an NBA star, Card says he likens his style to Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors because he doesn’t always need to touch the ball to impact the game.
“I would say that I’m big on off-ball movement. I like to get myself open without having the ball, especially on the three-point line.”
With the addition of Card, Heggie continues his focus on keeping southern Alberta talent close to home. He adds that signing local players creates some positive buzz and a domino effect that helps his program become a choice destination for local basketball players looking to play at the next level.
“It continues to be important for our program that we attract these quality young men, especially if they’re from southern Alberta. It’s nice to keep our local talent playing locally,” says Heggie. “Signing Adyn will create a buzz that will help us land other south zone players in the near future.”
