Soccer Recap: Kodiaks sweep weeekend
The Kodiaks soccer teams took all 12 points this weekend.
Oct. 3, 2022 - It was a much needed 12-point weekend for head coach Sean Carey and his Lethbridge College Kodiaks men's and women's soccer teams.
Both Kodiaks squads swept the weekend, delivering two big wins at Medicine Hat College on Friday before grabbing two more against Ambrose University on Saturday.
On Friday, the Kodiaks women used two goals from Taylor Hrycun and a single tally from Montanna Rousselle to power a 3-nil victory at MHC. The Kodiaks dominated possession throughout, and goalkeeper Jordan Quinn was sharp when called upon to earn the clean sheet in net.
The Kodiaks offense then exploded for 11 goals against the Lions on Saturday. Nikki Stahl and Ashley Sazalski led the way by each recording hat tricks, while Olivia DePasquale tallied a pair. Megan Morrison, Sammy Demchuk and Malorie Hanson each scored singles while Brooke Krowchuk earned the clean sheet in net.
With the wins, the Kodiaks sit third in the ACAC south division standings with a 5W-2L-1D record.
On the men's side, the Kodiaks continued their recent trend of dominant second halfs. The weekend started with a crucial 3-nil victory at MHC on Friday. Both teams battled hard in a scoreless first half before Charlie Block broke the ice in the 54th minute by redirecting a ball off a Brandon Francis corner to give the visitors a 1-nil advantage. Two late goals from Jaxon Uhl helped put the game away, while goalkeeper Ethan Demers turned aside nine shots to earn the cleansheet.
The Kodiaks then secured the weekend sweep with a 5-2 win over Ambrose the following day. The hosts actually conceded an early first goal, but an Ambrose handball allowed Brian Sure to tie the game on a penalty kick shortly after. Uhl put the Kodiaks ahead just seconds into the second half, before a brace from Liam Frost put the Kodiaks up 4-1. Ambrose attempted a late comeback, scoring in the 77th minute to draw within two, but an Ethan Meerkerk goal just minutes later put things away. Demers once again earned the victory in the Kodiaks net.
The victories helped the Kodiaks push into second place in the ACAC south division standings with a 3W-1L-3D record.
The Kodiaks now prepare for the penultimate weekend of the regular season, hosting the SAIT Trojans this upcoming Saturday before visiting the Olds College Broncos on Sunday.
