Bio
Ryan Heggie took over the Kodiaks Men's Basketball program in the 2011-12 season and has since led the team to 12 ACAC playoff appearances in his 13 years as head coach. Under his leadership, the team captured ACAC gold medals in 2014-15, silver in 2016-17, and bronze in 2013-14 and 2022-23. Heggie also guided the program to two CCAA national appearances, securing a CCAA bronze medal at Nationals in 2014-15.
A native of Raymond, Alberta, Heggie was a standout player for the Kodiaks in 1984-85, earning CCAA All-Canadian honours. From 1985-89, he played for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, where he was a Canada West Champion in 1985-86 and a Canada West All-Star in 1986-87 and 1988-89.
Heggie’s daughters—Jaclyn, Brooke, and Haylee Jo—also wore the Kodiaks colors from 2012 to 2019.
At Lethbridge Polytechnic, Heggie initiated and ran the Kodiaks Summer League from 2013-2020 and continues to serve as a summer camp coordinator for the Kodiaks. He also runs his own youth basketball camps, Heggie’s Hoop Camps, established in 1989, helping develop the next generation of players.
Heggie has earned the respect of his peers, having been named ACAC South Coach of the Year in 2016, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Known for emphasizing aggressive team defense and unselfish offense, his Kodiak teams feature contributions from many players across the roster.
“Since I started in 2011, the coaching staff and players, past and present have worked hard to help build our culture and a reputable successful program while continuing the Legacy of Kodiaks Basketball”
Heggie has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Lethbridge, 1992
