Weekend Recap: Kodiaks soccer teams advance to playoffs
The Kodiaks soccer teams played their last regular season matches over the weekend and both now have their sights set on the playoffs.
The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks soccer teams played their last regular season matches over the weekend and both now have their sights set on the playoffs.
On Saturday the women’s soccer team hosted the University of Alberta–Augustana Vikings and the Kodiaks were victorious.
On Sunday, both teams travelled to Medicine Hat College where they faced the Rattlers. The women’s team won and the men’s team fell short.
Both the men’s and women’s Kodiaks teams clinched playoff spots in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Soccer Championships next weekend which will be hosted by Northwestern Polytechnic in Grande Prairie. Both Kodiaks teams finished as third seeds in the south division, earning them first-round matches against the second- seeded team in the north division, the Keyano College Huskies.
Oct. 19 WSOC | Kodiaks 2 vs UAA Vikings 1
The Kodiaks women hosted the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings as the final home match of the season. It was an even match up in the first half with no goals being scored. The Kodiaks defence held up a strong line and didn’t let the Vikings get off any shots. The Kodiaks offence was able to get five shots but none found the back of the net.
At half, the Kodiaks were able to regroup and come back with another strategy. The Kodiaks offence became more aggressive and increased their shot range. Five minutes into the second half Kyra Piekema (second year, General Arts and Science, Lethbridge) sneaked one past the goalie. This was followed by another goal from Megan Morrison (fourth year, Bachelor of Nursing, Medicine Hat). Closer to the end of the match, the Kodiaks energy dropped, and the Vikings were able to capitalize and score one of their own. The match ended 2-1 in favour of the Kodiaks.

Oct. 20 WSOC | Kodiaks 2 vs MHC Rattlers 1
The Kodiaks women played the Medicine Hat College Rattlers Sunday. The Kodiaks switched up their lineup and started Keyarah Tofin (second year, Business Administration – Accounting, Medicine Hat) in net for her second career start. It was a very back-and-forth, scoreless match in the first half.
In the second half Morrison opened the scoring for the Kodiaks within the first minute back in play. The Rattlers were able to respond and even up the match in the 66th minute. The Kodiaks kept firing, totalling 11 shots before Shelby Bach (fifth year, Early Childhood Education, Medicine Hat) scored the game winner in the final minute of the match.

The Kodiaks women’s soccer team finished the season third in the south division with a record of 8-4. They will play the first round of the ACAC Soccer Championships at 12:30 p.m. Friday against the Keyano College Huskies.
Oct. 20 MSOC | Kodiaks 0 vs MHC Rattlers 5
The Kodiaks men travelled to Medicine Hat for their last match of the regular season. The Kodiaks came out with low energy and the Rattlers took advantage. The Rattlers were able to control play for most of this match. The Kodiaks were only able to get four shots on net whereas the Rattlers had 12 and scored on five on those. The Kodiaks fell 5-0.

The Kodiaks men’s soccer team finished the season third in the south division with a record of 5-3-2. They will play the first round of the ACAC Soccer Championships at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25 against the Keyano College Huskies.
