The 2024 ACAC Indoor Track Championships ended with gold medals and new records for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s team and a historic silver-medal finish for the women.
March 18, 2024 – The 2024 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Championships ended with gold medals and new records for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s team and a historic silver-medal finish for the women.
The men’s team defended its title, winning back-to-back ACAC championships while finishing with 101 points and four new ACAC and Lethbridge College records. The Kodiaks women’s indoor track team ended with the highest finish in program history, placing second overall with 49.50 points.
The men's team had an outstanding performance with nine podium finishes as well as four new ACAC and Lethbridge College records as well. Owen Stewart (second year, General Arts and Science, Lethbridge) showcased his dominance by winning gold and shattering records in both the 600-metre and 1000-metre events, while also winning gold in the 1500-metre event. In addition, in the 60-metre race, Orin May (second year, General Arts and Science, Medicine Hat) finished second and Gunnarr Gibb (third year, Exercise Science, Cardston) finished third, and in the 300-metre race, Gibb finished first while May finished second.
The Kodiaks also dominated the relay events. The 4x200-metre relay team, comprised of May, Gibb, Cole Guilbert (third year, Conservation Enforcement, Neepawa, Man.) and Jonah Hennig (second year, Correctional Studies, Blackfalds, Alta.) won gold and not only surpassed last year's ACAC and college record, but set new ones. As well, the 4x400-metre relay team, consisting of Gibb, Hennig, May, and Stewart, won gold and set a new record in the ACAC and at the college.
The women’s team’s strength this year came from their relay events, succeeding in both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays. In the 4x200m relay, the team consisting of Ta'merra Hart (first year, Academic Upgrading, Hanna, Alta.), Kayla Mangatal (first year, General Arts and Science, Okotoks), Rayanne Hoeflicher (third year, Bachelor of Nursing, Middle Lake, Sask.), and Ngozi Onwuka (first year, Practical Nurse, Calgary) secured a second-place finish. Similarly, in the 4x400m relay, the team, led by Hoeflicher, Hart, Kate Block (first year, Exercise Science, Waldheim, Sask.), and Katrina Michel (first year, Practical Nurse, Okotoks), clinched another impressive second-place spot.
This marked the inaugural year that the ACAC welcomed para-athletes to compete in its events, marking a significant milestone in inclusivity. Though the races remain unofficial, Hunter Graves (first year, General Arts and Science, Raymond) took part in the 60-metre and 300-metre events, receiving well-deserved recognition at the championships with a gold medal.
