March 23, 2023 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women's soccer continues to expand its roster for the upcoming 2023 season by signing local athlete, Kyra Piekema.
Piekema is a tall striker currently attending Lethbridge’s Catholic Central High School. Being a local and playing for a team that has strong ties with the Kodiaks, Lethbridge Football Club (LFC), Piekema says “I already felt part of the team so it will be a good transition.”
Head coach Sean Carey says he sees Piekema being a significant addition to the team. “She makes life hard for defenders,” says Carey. “You know you’re in a battle when Kyra’s on the field.”
After earning a bronze medal at the 2022 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships, the Kodiaks are determined to continue their momentum and strive for even greater success. Carey says he’s excited to be adding a player who can score goals in high pressure situations.
Piekema will join five other LFC athletes who committed to play for the Kodiaks in the upcoming season. Mike Racz, who used to coach the Kodiaks soccer teams, has been coaching this group of LFC girls since they were nine years old.
Piekema says one of her greatest takes away from Racz is “be your best self for the team.” She is looking forward to the opportunity to get to know her new teammates and deepen her relationships with the other LFC recruits. She has enrolled in the General Arts and Science program.
“Big shout out to Mike and LFC for developing these players,” says Carey. “They’re not going to be passengers on this journey, they’re going to be a big part of it as we move forward.”
Carey is excited to have his coaching staff take over the development of Piekema. “I think after working with our fall coaches they’ll be able to get the best out of her.”
