Kodiaks women’s soccer secures commitment from Waurynchuk
The Kodiaks women’s soccer team continues to strengthen its roster with the signing of experienced defender Ana Waurynchuk.
May 19, 2023 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s soccer team continues to strengthen its roster with the signing of experienced defender Ana Waurynchuk. Hailing from Cranbrook, B.C., Waurynchuk spent the past three years playing for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
The speedy and tenacious defender says she is looking forward to playing for the Kodiaks, which is a bit closer to home and is “a competitive team that I wanted to join.”
Head coach Sean Carey says Waurynchuk is pushing for the starting centre-back position. “She's strong, she's quick and she's really going to give us an added security and insurance,” he says. “She's going to really fill a role that we need, and I feel like we always want that depth.”
The Kodiaks team is coming off a bronze medal win at the 2022 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships. “Last year, when we were in the final game, we had to have players playing out of position,” says Carey. “With Ana there will be some added security for us to be able to move on to wherever we want her.”
Waurynchuk will be joined by former Rattlers athlete Shelby Bach, who also committed to play for the Kodiaks in the upcoming season. She says it’s nice to be able to go into a new team with a familiar face. “I’m also looking forward to having a really big team,” she says. “It will be great to have good practices when you can really compete with each other.”
Waurynchuk, who graduated from Mount Baker Secondary School in Cranbook, B.C., plans to enrol in General Studies program at the college.
