Kodiaks soccer takes on Yukon
Kodiaks men’s and women’s soccer teams embarked on a journey to Whitehorse, YT this week.
Aug. 25, 2023 - With invaluable backing from the Kodiaks community, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s soccer teams embarked on a journey to Whitehorse, YT this week. Months of dedicated fundraising by both teams culminated in the necessary funds for this expedition, which marks the inaugural preseason trip under Coach Sean Carey for the soccer programs.
Throughout the week, both teams have been undergoing essential pre-season training, led by Sean Fleming, Soccer Canada's youth national coach. In addition to two intensive training sessions, they will partake in strength and conditioning programs provided by the esteemed Northern Strength Academy. Adding to the excitement, they are scheduled to play in exhibition matches against the Yukon Selects teams, further enhancing their competitive edge.
The teams and coaches are also excited to spread the word about Kodiaks athletics, the soccer programs and Lethbridge college to the local community. They're not just playing soccer – they're planning to host fun kids' camps to help young athletes learn and develop their skills. The Kodiaks are also assisting local coaches through a series of seminars to improve their coaching techniques and understand their players on and off the field.
While the whole trip itself is team building, they do have fun activities planned for the student-athletes to get to know each other in an environment away from soccer. They will experience Yukon’s nature through multiple hikes and a barbeque evening at a lake to allow the teams time to hang out in a relaxed environment.
One major focus that the coaching staff has been working on for the Kodiaks soccer program is the concept of outworking every other team. Their approach to achieving this goal involves putting in the extra effort beyond just game time – it's about working together diligently as a team and maintaining a positive outlook. This trip will provide the perfect opportunity to put these strategies into practice, from the intense training and competition to the team bonding activities off the field.
