Weekend Recap: Kodiaks pushed through a busy weekend
The Kodiaks were playing across Alberta this past weekend.
Oct. 17, 2023 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks were playing across Alberta this past weekend, including the men’s and women’s basketball teams kicking off their seasons with wins.
On Saturday, the cross-country team competed in their last event before championships. Soccer hosted the Ambrose Lions where the women’s team won, and the men’s match ended in a tie. Basketball travelled to the Camrose where both men and women came away with wins.
On Sunday, Kodiaks soccer faced off against the top team, SAIT Trojans. Both teams fought hard, but they ultimately fell short to the Trojans.
The Kodiaks will celebrate Homecoming Weekend with three days of action. Kodiaks basketball and volleyball take on Ambrose University, Friday and Saturday respectively. Kodiaks soccer wraps up the regular season taking on Highway 3 rivals, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Sunday.
Sept. 30 CC | Grand Prix #4 hosted by UAA Vikings
The day provided sunny weather conditions for the Running Room Grand Prix #4. The men’s team finished third overall with the women’s team coming in fourth.
Kodiaks men’s runners Owen Stewart (second year, General Studies, Lethbridge), Justin Fisher (fourth year, Bachelor of Nursing degree, Claresholm), Ethan Grasmeyer (first year, Natural Resource Compliance, Smithers, B.C.) came in 10th, 12th and 13th place, respectively.
On the women’s side Katrina Michel (first year, Practical Nursing, Okotoks) had the highest finish for the Kodiaks placing seventh overall, followed by Rosie Bouchard (fourth year, Bachelor of Ecosystem Management, Okotoks) in 12th and Kate Block (first year, Exercise Science, Waldheim, Sask.) in 16th.
Oct. 14 WBB | Kodiaks 83 at UAA Vikings 65
The Kodiaks opened their season against the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings on Saturday. Although both teams have different rosters, emotions were still there as the Vikings eliminated the Kodiaks from championships last season. Both teams had strong starts as the first quarter came to a close with the Kodiaks up 21-19.
The Vikings came out with energy in the second quarter putting pressure on the Kodiaks defence. Montana Berezay (fourth year, Open Studies, Magrath) was able to pull away two defensive rebounds to help limit the damage. The Vikings led at the half-time, 32-37.
The Kodiaks regrouped during the break and came back playing with urgency. Hannah Sloan (fifth year, Exercise Science, Okotoks) led the charge with 14 points for the Kodiaks in the third. The Kodiaks took back the lead 61-49.
Going into the last quarter the Kodiaks picked up their defence and limited Vikings’ scoring opportunities. Kitawna Sparks (second year, Business Administration, Taber) got back into an offensive rhythm adding six points to the Kodiaks score. The Kodiaks were able to take the game 83-65.

Oct. 14 MBB | Kodiaks 90 at UAA Vikings 82
The Kodiaks had a scoring touch to open the season against the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings on Saturday. They came out with the hot hand led by Filip Karanovic (third year, General Studies Psychology Sociology, Herceg Novic, Montenegro) with eight points. The Kodiaks finished the first quarter up 25-17 over the Vikings.
In the second quarter, the Kodiaks slowed down a little giving the Vikings a chance to stay with them. Jared Heggie (third year, General Studies, Raymond) came off the bench and picked up two defensive rebounds. Even with the Vikings’ push, the Kodiaks held the lead at half at 44-38.
After halftime, the Kodiaks picked up their energy as Mason Hoffman (second year, General Studies, Yorkton, Sask.) picked up seven points and Declan Peterson (second year, Business Administration, Bentley, Alta.) put away eight. The Kodiaks ended the third up 72-58.
Going into the last quarter, Hoffman didn’t take his foot off the gas as he helped the Kodiaks to nine more points. The Vikings did make one last attempt to come back, outscoring the Kodiaks by six in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough. The Kodiaks won 90-82.

Oct. 14 WSOC | Kodiaks 6 vs AMB Lions 0
The Kodiaks hosted the Ambrose University Lions on Saturday. Lethbridge controlled the pace of the game, with Kyra Piekema (first year, General Studies, Lethbridge) scoring just two minutes in. The Kodiaks kept the ball in the Lion’s end with many chances to score from corner kicks. Ambrose was able to hold the Kodiaks off the score stayed at 1-0 for the half.
The second half started much like the first with Piekema scoring her second of the day. The Kodiaks continued add to the scoreboard when Nikki Stahl (fifth year, Unit Clerk, Lethbridge) hit one from well outside the 18-yard box. The Kodiaks tacked on another three with goals from Taylor Hrycun (fifth year, General Studies, Edmonton), Aleks Bower (first year, Correctional Studies, Lethbridge), and Rylee Worsey (first year, General Studies – English, Raymond). The game ended 6-0 Kodiaks.

Oct. 15 WSOC | Kodiaks 0 at SAIT Trojans 1
The Kodiaks matched up against the No. 1 team in the south division, SAIT, on Sunday. The Trojans scored one minute into the game, taking advantage of a miscommunication by the Kodiaks. The Kodiaks we’re able to reset after the goal and get a few shots on net before the half finished out.
The game picked up pace in the second half with more attempts coming from both sides of the Field. Samantha Burgis (first year, Open Studies, Whitehorse) made six critical saves in net to keep the Kodiaks in the game. Late into the match, the Kodiaks had their best scoring chance of the game with a penalty kick. Nikki Stahl (fifth year, Unit Clerk, Lethbridge) took the kick and hit the crossbar. The Kodiaks continued to add pressure by pinching in their defence, but time ran out. The Trojans won the match 1-0.

Oct. 14 MSOC | Kodiaks 1 vs AMB Lions 1
Both teams showed up to play which resulted in good chances from both sides. Emotions ran high as a handful of fouls were given out resulting in free kicks each way. Ambrose struck first with an outstanding forecheck on the Kodiaks defence resulting in a turnover that led to the Lions scoring. The half ended with a score of 1-0 for Ambrose.
The Kodiaks turned it up in the second keeping Ambrose hemmed in their end for much of the half. The Lions played well defensively, highlighted by a standout performance from their goalie. The Kodiaks were finally able to break through in the 88th minute when Brandon Francis (second year, Exercise Science, Lethbridge) cracked the Lions defence to score. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Oct. 15 MSOC | Kodiaks 0 at SAIT Trojans 7
The men’s team faced the nationally second-ranked SAIT Trojans on Sunday. The Kodiaks fought hard but fell short as the Trojans put together five goals in the first half.
Early into the second half, the Trojans received a red card leaving them 10 men on the field for the rest of the match. This allowed the Kodiaks to get a few more shots on goal. The Trojans were able to keep their momentum going as they scored two more goals in the second. The Kodiaks were shut out 7-0.
