Weekend Preview: Kodiaks Futsal Teams Gear Up for Championships
The Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams will be hunting for hardware this weekend as they compete in the 2023 ACAC Futsal Championships.
March 10, 2023 – The Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams will be hunting for hardware this weekend as they compete in the 2023 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Futsal Championships in Fort McMurray.
Both Kodiaks sides enter the event as the third seed in the south division and are grouped in a pool with the SAIT Trojans and host Keyano College Huskies. Both men and women’s teams battle Keyano to open the tournament on Friday, then match up against SAIT on Saturday. Playoff round games will follow later that afternoon, with medal round games taking place Sunday.

Generating offence will be key for the Kodiaks women's team as they look to close out the season with a championship title. Olivia DePasquale (third year, General Studies, Airdrie) will be counted on as a key offensive driver as her booming shot is a threat from distance. Goalkeeper Brooke Krowchuk (first year, Criminal Justice Policing, Cochrane, Alta.) is coming off an outstanding weekend in net at the south division regional tournament, including a shutout in the team’s 12-0 win over Prairie College.

The Kodiaks men’s futsal team will look to continue their strong form from the south division regional tournament. The team cemented their place at championships by scoring two goals in the last minute to pull off a 4-4 tie against SAIT, who entered the match undefeated. Kyeler Paxman-Viani (second year, General Studies Psychology Sociology, Lethbridge) was named a Kodiaks athlete of the week after the tournament, scoring key goals and proving to be a huge asset for the team in pressure situations.
