Weekend Preview: Kodiaks sports in full gear this weekend

All Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks winter sports teams are competing this weekend.
Kodiaks basketball will host the Olds College Broncos. The women tip off at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium followed by the men at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the teams face off again with games at 1 and 3 p.m.
Kodiaks volleyball is on the road at Olds College. First serve tomorrow will be 6 p.m. for the women with the men starting at 8 p.m. The Kodiaks and Broncos will also play on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.
Kodiaks futsal will travel down Highway 3 for a rematch against the Medicine Hat Rattlers on Saturday. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
Indoor track competition in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) also begins this weekend in Edmonton. The Kodiaks men’s and women’s team will travel up to the Kinsmen Sport Centre for their first meet of the season.

The Kodiaks women’s basketball team is hungry for a win after last week’s two-game battle against a nationally ranked squad. They will be looking to take control of the game early when they tip off against the Olds Broncos. First-year standout Bailey Blackmore (first year, Bachelor of Nursing, Magrath) has come into the new year proving her leadership within this team as she’s currently leading the Kodiaks offensively with 132 points. Another key piece to this offence is Gaby Power (third year, Early Childhood Education, Calgary) as she’s led her team in assists the past two games.

The Kodiaks men’s basketball team is looking to pick up two wins and hold onto their third place standing with only a handful of games left in the regular season. Ryan Degner (fourth year, Open Studies, Lethbridge) and Treydon Barton (third year, General Arts and Science, Raymond) have proved to be a huge part of the Kodiaks offence, leading the team in points. On the defensive side, Jackson Wright (second year, Business Administration, Claresholm) has been a notable presence in the paint, picking up 40 defensive rebounds for the team this season.

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team will be looking to bounce back this weekend as they match up against the Olds College Broncos. They will be setting the ball to their veteran player Aideena Wickstrom (fifth year, Exercise Science, Coaldale) as she leads the team’s offence with the most kills on the season at 137. On the defensive end, Quincy Price (second year, General Arts and Science, Coaldale) has taken control of the back court for serve receive and leads the team in passes.

The Kodiaks men’s volleyball team looks to continue their dominance in the south division as they take on the Olds College Broncos. They will be looking to Kodiaks athlete of the week, Nolan Moes (fifth year, Natural Resource Compliance, Barrhead, Alta.), to lead as his numbers continue to grow. Moes currently sits third in the conference with 168 kills on the season. Kohlbe Anderson (second year, Business Administration, Claymont, Del.) has been a defensive weapon at the net. He sits fourth overall in the conference for total blocks with 93.

WFUT | Kodiaks (0-1) vs Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-0)

The Kodiaks women’s futsal team has a chance for redemption against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers after they lost by one goal in their first match of the season. The team will look to their goalkeeper Kiara Jankowiak (second year, General Arts and Science, Lethbridge) to set the pace of the game. Jankowiak was able to contribute to the team’s offense by making shot attempts from the other end of the court, creating opportunities for her teammates. Ana Waurynchuk (fourth year, Interior Design Technology, Cranbrook, B.C.) scored the team's sole goal in their previous match and she will be counted on to do the same in this matchup.
MFUT | Kodiaks (0-1) vs Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-0)

The Kodiaks men’s futsal team has another opportunity to play the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, having spent the past week sharpening their skills and refining their strategy. The team will rely on their veteran leader, Wilson Ntignee (fifth year, Business Administration, Bori, Nigeria), to set the tone early and maintain high energy throughout the game. First-year players Emiliano Garcia Velarde (first year, Agricultural Sciences, Saltillo, Mexico) and Tosin Akinola (first year, Business Administration – Accounting, Lagos, Nigeria) were the standout scorers in the first matchup, and they’ll be counted on again to bring the same offensive intensity in the upcoming game.
Indoor Track
IT | Grand Prix #1 hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton

The Kodiaks indoor track teams start off their 2025 campaign Saturday morning in Edmonton. They will compete in the first two Running Room Grand Prix events before hosting the third on March 1 at the University of Lethbridge.
