Kodiaks women’s volleyball team adds ACAC veteran

The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s volleyball team has added Spruce Grove, Alta., resident Emma Blumenschein to its roster for the 2024-25 season. She is a six-foot middle in her third year of competing in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).
Blumenschein played for both The Kings University Eagles (2021-22) and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks (2022-23). After taking a year off, she’s coming back to the league. At Lethbridge Polytechnic, she will continue her education in the Nursing Bachelor’s Degree program.
Initially, Blumenschein reached out to Kodiaks head coach Anna Schwark by email. Her post-secondary experience caught Schwark’s eye.
“I was able to chat with a prior coach of hers who had positive things to say about her front- row defence as a middle which was also something we were looking for going into this season,” says Schwark.
Blumenschien says she was drawn to the polytechnic for more than its volleyball program.
“I chose Lethbridge Polytechnic because it offers a strong balance between academics and athletics,” says Blumenschein. “The polytechnic offers nursing and is well-known for its practical, hands-on program that prepares students for real-world careers, which aligns perfectly with my career goals. Additionally, their reputation for academic support ensures that I'll be able to succeed both in the classroom and on the court.”
Blumenschein was invited to training in the spring where she showcased her play in the front row and how she uses her height to an advantage. She brings experience and maturity. She immediately took the initiative to communicate with the setter to work on their connection to run plays.
“The sense of community and tradition within the ACAC is something I wanted to be a part of,” says Blumenschein. “I’m looking forward to the overall experience of being part of this team and representing our school. The camaraderie, the support from fans, and the memories we’ll create together are all things I’m excited about.”
The anticipation is echoed by Schwark. “I feel like she will be a really positive example for the team and the community as she continues through both the volleyball and nursing programs,” says Schwark.
