Kodiaks women’s basketball signs tenacious ICS forward

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team is excited to add Nyomi Heins, a tough and determined forward from the two-time provincial championship team at Immanuel Christian Secondary School, to the roster for the 2024-25 season. Heins plans to enrol in the General Arts and Science – Health Sciences program.

Kodiaks head coach Ken McMurray says he expects Heins will bring some high-level experiences with her to the Kodiaks. 

“Immanuel Christian has been a basketball dynasty the past few years (winning the high school 2A provincial championships in 2023 and 2024), and Heins has had a lot to do with that success,” says McMurray. “She has been coached well, with Mike and Emily Greeno as her leaders.”

Emily Greeno has experience both playing and assistant coaching for the Kodiaks women’s basketball team, and she speaks highly of the program. With Greeno’s encouragement, Heins decided to pursue post-secondary athletics and came out to talent I.D. camps.

McMurray says the coaching staff was pleased to see Heins in action on the court. “She is often asked to guard and score against bigger defenders, and she most often holds her own,” he says. “Every team needs toughness and grit, and these are the traits that stick out when watching her play.”

Heins says getting to experience the Kodiaks culture and connect with a new coaching staff, including assistant coach Deanna Simpson, made it easy to sign.

“I’m a loud player, I will be bringing my excitement to this team,” she says. “I look forward to getting to know the other girls better and making new friendships.”
