Kodiaks men’s basketball signs first recruit for the upcoming season
Kodiaks men’s basketball team has signed its first recruit of the 2025-26 season.
The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s basketball team has signed its first recruit of the 2025-26 season. Matt Payne is an incoming guard from Magrath who says he is ready to compete at the collegiate level.
“Matt is a very versatile player,” says Kodiaks head coach Ryan Heggie. “He plays an up-tempo game, finishes at the rim well, can shoot the three-ball and has the ability to defend in the half and full court. He’s an athletic player who fits our style of basketball.”
The recruiting process for Payne started in high school with coach Heggie watching him play in league games. This eventually led to Payne being invited to join gym sessions with the Kodiaks.
Payne, who took a year off from basketball after graduating from Magrath High School, says he’s excited to get back into the rhythm of things. “To be able to get back on the court and play is really exciting for me so, I’m looking forward to that,” he says.
“All athletes at Lethbridge Polytechnic have a great opportunity to grow and develop because the culture here is solid, and the supports and facilities for student-athletes are top notch,” says Heggie. “Signing Matt is big for us, he was a top ten Alberta high school recruit in 2024.”
Payne says he grew up watching Kodiaks home games and enjoys the type of environment the Val Matteotti Gymnasium provides. He adds that having family nearby to come out and support him, was a big factor in his decision to join the team.
“It’s an awesome opportunity to play for your hometown,” says Payne. “I’m excited to be able to have my family come out and watch.”
Payne also says he’s looking forward to reuniting with former high school teammate Levi Balderson (first year, General Arts and Science, Welling, Alta.) and getting the chance to play together again.
