The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s and women’s head soccer and futsal coach Sean Carey, who is the winningest soccer/futsal coach in Kodiaks history, has announced his retirement.
In ten and a half years (2009-11, 2017-2025) as head coach for the Kodiaks, Carey has earned a lot of accomplishments for the institution:
- Won 91 regular season soccer games and 37 futsal regular games.
- Four-time ACAC women’s coach of the year
- Two-time men’s ACAC coach of the year and one-time CCAA men’s coach of the year.
- 18 women’s all-conference players
- 17 men’s all-conference players
- Coached 1 men’s All-Canadian and 1 women’s All-Canadian
- Coached one CCAA/ACAC player of the year (Ben Knight) and two CCAA All-Canadians (Ben Knight, Christine Moser)
- Averaged 6 student athletes a year to be recognized with All Conference & National Academic honours
In 2019 he led the Kodiaks men’s soccer program to an ACAC gold medal where the team travelled to Oshawa, Ont. to compete in CCAA National championships. His 2023-24 women’s team won its first regular season title and best regular season record of 11-1 since the program’s inaugural year in 1994.
“I’ve had the privilege to coach some amazing athletes and people who have left it all out there on the field for me,” says Carey. “I’ve generated some excellent relationships along the way with players, staff, and opposing coaches that I will treasure moving forward.”
“On behalf of the institution and the Kodiaks I want to Thank Sean for all the years and dedication he put towards the programs,” says Todd Caughlin, Kodiaks Athletics and Recreation Services Director. “Sean and his staff committed to building a perennial conference champion contender for both the men’s and women’s programs and we are proud of the work they did. It takes a person that is dedicated and has a genuine concern for the well being of their student athlete’s year in and out and Sean and the rest of the Kodiaks coaching staff’s show that every year! I wish Sean the best and I know he will enjoy his additional time with his family, farm and business.”
Carey plans on spending his extra time working on his main career as a carpenter as well as travelling as often as he can.
