MSOC | Brooks native McClelland joins the Kodiaks
Head coach Sean Carey has added another speedy winger to his roster.
Sept. 7, 2022 – Head coach Sean Carey has added another speedy winger to his roster, as Ethan McClelland has committed to joining the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer team.
“I saw Ethan about four years ago at a tournament in Edmonton and he really stood out; in my opinion, he was the best player there,” says Carey. “It’s great that he chose Lethbridge College as the place he wanted to be. We can play him as a winger or a fullback. He’s got speed and he’s physical. He’s really settled into any position we’ve put him so far. He’s another player that’s come in hard, pushing for a starting spot.”
McClelland is one of 15 rookies on the Kodiaks men’s roster this year, and Carey has been enjoying the youthful energy and competition at training camp.
“It’s exciting to see this new crop of young quality players coming through. I call it a retool, not a rebuild. Even though we’re young, I see the foundation of a group that wants to push towards challenging for another national championship tournament.”
While McClelland primarily has experience playing wing, the rookie says he’s looking to help the team any way he can.
“Whatever works for the team works for me,” says McClelland. “As long as I’m out on the pitch helping the team, I’m happy. I hope to bring tons of speed and I can deliver the ball quite well. I love to beat guys one-on-one.”
The Kodiaks newcomer says training camp has been a great experience, and he can’t wait to see what the team can do in the regular season.
“Up top we’ve got lots of speed, we have lots of skillful players and lots of first years as well,” says McLelland. “I think we're all eager and ready to have a great season against some good competition.”
A new season on the horizon
The Kodiaks men’s soccer team went 2-1 last weekend during an exhibition trip to Red Deer. The team is now preparing for their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season opener on Friday at Ambrose University. The Kodiaks home opener will take place on Sunday at Servus Centre Outdoor Field against Medicine Hat College.
