The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s volleyball team has secured one of the top recruits in the province with the signing of St. Paul resident and Team Alberta athlete Nick Billo.
Billo will graduate from St. Paul Regional High School this spring and start in the college’s General Arts and Science program this fall.
He joins the Kodiaks after making Team Alberta as an underaged athlete and has been a key part of the program’s success over the last three years including a silver medal at Canada Cup in Niagara in 2023. This season Billo played for the national-contending NOOKs under-18 program.
Billo is a six-foot-three middle blocker who has shown tenacity, work ethic and drive. These attributes are what motivated head coach Greg Gibos to reach out during the recruiting process.
“When we are recruiting, we are constantly asking coaches about athletes’ work ethic, motivation and desire to win,” says Gibos. “Every single person I spoke to about Nick shared a sentiment that he’s the hardest-working athlete in their gym.”
Gibos says it’s Billo’s incredible desire to grow that will make him a tremendous addition to the Kodiaks program. Billo’s commitment to the sport speaks volumes; he makes the two-hour trek to Edmonton for training sessions five times a week.
“I’m so excited to be a Kodiak,” says Billo. “The campus, class size and competitiveness of the programs really brought me in. I can tell this program and coaching staff want to push its student-athletes to accomplish great things, and it’s certainly something I want to become a part of.”
Billo attributes his values to his small-town upbringing, crediting his parents and community for shaping him. Their support drives his pursuit of self-improvement and have helped achieve at a high level.
