Coaldale track star commits to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks
The Kodiaks men’s indoor track team signed a local powerhouse, Tyler Wiebe, to its roster
The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s indoor track team signed a local powerhouse, Tyler Wiebe, to its roster. The sprinter from the Coaldale area competes with the Lethbridge Track and Field Club as well as Kate Andrews High School.
Kodiaks assistant coach Aaron Hernandez has connections to Kate Andrews High School as he once attended the school and now coaches its team. There is already a working connection between Hernandez and Wiebe’s. Wiebe will specialize in indoor tracks 60-, 300- and 4x200-metre relay events for the Kodiaks.
“He quickly made a name for himself in the 100m sprint as the guy to beat in the south,” says Hernandez. “He put on an impressive display at provincials last year wearing normal warm-up shoes versus traditional sprint spikes.”
Hernandez sees a lot of natural speed and talent from Wiebe that he believes can be honed to make him one to watch in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) indoor track season.
Wiebe’s reasons for joining the Kodiaks were based off the culture that has been built with the program over the years. “I think it is really cool to be a part of something that has such a family-oriented drive for each other. To be able to push each other past our limits is something I have always admired about a team.”
The Kodiaks men’s indoor team has dominated on the track the last couple of years, winning back-to-back championships.
“He quickly fit in during his tryout session with us,” says Hernandez. “With a lot of our men’s sprinters graduating this year, we will look to our rookie class, including Tyler, to step up in their absence and deliver for the program.”
Wiebe will start in the Carpenter apprenticeship program and begin training with the team in the winter semester of 2025. The coaching staff is eager to see how Wiebe's fresh energy and skills will contribute to the team dynamic, especially in a year when new leaders will need to emerge.
