Kodiaks futsal teams qualify for ACAC Championships
The Kodiaks futsal teams have qualified for the ACAC Championships.
March 14, 2022 – Consider it mission accomplished for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s and women’s futsal teams.
Both Kodiaks sides finished divisional stage play in first place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) south division, successfully punching their tickets to the 2022 ACAC Futsal Championships in the process.
Pitted against south division rivals from Ambrose University and Medicine Hat College (MHC), the Kodiaks entered the weekend knowing nothing less than a first-place finish would see them advance.
After going 2-0 in the first weekend of play, the Kodiaks men took care of business early and clinched their championships spot with a hard fought 4-3 comeback victory in their opening game against Ambrose. With their spot secured, the team then fell 7-6 in their finale against MHC, finishing divisional round play with a 3-1 record.
The Kodiaks women secured their spot in more dramatic fashion. After going 1-1 during the opening weekend of play, the Kodiaks knew they needed to win both of their remaining matches to give themselves the best chance of clinching a championships berth.
They delivered when it mattered most, trouncing Ambrose 10-2 in their first game before downing the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 5-1 in a heated affair between Highway 3 rivals, sparking a raucous Kodiaks celebration at the final whistle.
The Rattlers and Kodiaks each finished divisional stage with 3-1 records, however the Kodiaks advance due to superior goal differential in their head-to-head matchups with MHC.
Looking ahead to ACAC Championships
The Kodiaks teams will now compete for a conference title at the 2022 ACAC Futsal Championships, which will be hosted by The King’s University (TKU) in Edmonton from March 26-27.
The Kodiaks women’s team will be part of a final four that includes SAIT, Keyano College and NAIT, while the men will take on rivals from SAIT, TKU and Portage. Each team will play three round robin games, one against each opponent, with the top two finishing teams advancing to the ACAC Gold Medal Game.
