MSOC | Kodiaks add skill, speed with Viani
The Kodiaks have introduced WCHS product Kyeler Viani as their latest recruit.
July 12, 2021 – Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer head coach Sean Carey has introduced local Winston Churchill High School product Kyeler Viani as the latest recruit to join his 2021 roster.
Viani is a wing back who promises to bring speed and creativity to a Kodiaks side looking to defend its Alberta College’s Athletic Conference championship this fall.
“Kyeler is an all-round player. He’s got a lot of tools,” says Carey. “You love a guy like him that’s just tenacious, quick and aggressive. He's got endless energy and skill too.”
Carey says Viani will be expected to push for a starting role right away, adding he will have big shoes to fill at the right back position.
“I really do see Kyeler pushing for a starting spot with the guys this fall,” says Carey. “He’s got big shoes to fill with the departure of Joel (Arrieus) because he plays that right back position. With Joel being done playing his five years and being one of the best Kodiaks of all time, Kyeler’s got some big shoes to fill for sure, but he can do it.”
After a lost season due to COVID, Viani says he is preparing hard to ensure he’s ready for the transition to the college game.
“I’m definitely really excited,” says Viani. “It's going to be a big jump into a post-secondary level. I want to push myself to be the best player I can be. Bring pace for along the wings and creativity on the ball.”
Viani credits the Vancouver Whitecaps ‘Caps 2 College Academy and head coach Sam Heap with helping him build the skills needed to help him get to the next level.
“Coach Sam has definitely pushed us to be the best players we can be on and off the field,” says Viani. “It's been a very positive experience.”
With the Kodiaks hopeful they can return to competition in just a few months, Viani says he can’t wait to meet his new teammates and focus on training.
“Just getting to meet the team and getting back on the field is exciting,” says Viani. “With COVID and everything, practices have been slim. With the season hopefully coming back around I'm excited to get back on the field.”
