Tim Tollestrup begain playing in high school in Raymond and after he graduated, Tollestrup would attend Utah State University on a full basketball scholarship. He would complete his degree but later returned to Alberta to play for one year at the University of Lethbridge. He was a member of the Canadian National Men's basketball team. The team participated in both the Pan Am Games in Cali, Columbia and in a pre-Olympic tournament in Osberg, Germany where they tried to qualify for the Olympics.
Tollestrup began at Lethbridge College in 1976 as a basketball coach and assumed the duties of Athletic Director. He served on the ACAC Executive Committee from 1983-1987, and again from 1988-2003.
In 1989, the college opened the Val Matteotti gymnasium in which Tim played an integral role in the planning of the facility.
