Weekend Preview: Kodiaks celebrate their seniors at home

Feb. 9, 2024 - Kodiaks volleyball fans won’t want to miss the final home games of the season taking place this Friday and Saturday night. Saturday will also see the graduating seniors honored for both teams. Volleyball takes on tough North division competition with the NAIT Ooks on Friday and the Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) Wolves on Saturday. The Kodiaks women’s volleyball will host the ACAC Women’s Championships Feb. 22 to 24. The men will travel to Olds College for the ACAC Men’s Championships the same weekend.
Basketball heads north to take on the NAIT Ooks and the NWP Wolves for the last away games of the regular season. Men’s and women’s futsal is at Prairie College for the weekend, making the final push before playoffs.
Indoor Track is on the road for their final Grand Prix before championships. Grand Prix #2 is hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic at the Gary W. Harris Centre this Saturday.

The women’s volleyball team will play their last league home games of the season against two North division teams this weekend before hosting the ACAC Championships.
The Kodiaks look to build off the success they have had the past two weekends to close out their season at home. Outside hitter Irina Korovina (fifth year, General Arts and Science, Calgary) has shown her leadership and offensive skill, averaging 1.41 kills per set. Taryn Bach (third year, Open Studies, Lethbridge) has 324 assists on the season, averaging 6.00 assists per set.

Kodiaks men's volleyball takes on the second-ranked team in the North division on Friday night with the NAIT Ooks, followed by NWP Wolves on Saturday. The Kodiaks are sitting in third place in the South, two points behind the Briercrest Clippers (13-4).
Shaye Wall (third year, Renewable Resource Management, Swift Current, Sask.) has proven to be an offensive threat for the Kodiaks this season, averaging 2.05 kills per set. Libero Tyler Chernishenko (fourth year, Business Administration, Edmonton) is 12th in the league with 1.74 digs per set.

Kodiaks women's basketball team heads north this weekend for games with the NAIT Ooks and the NWP Wolves. The Kodiaks, second in the South, look to make a late season push to take over the top seed. The Kodiaks have had a successful season; they are ranked eighth in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
Hannah Helton (fifth year, Exercise Science, Okotoks) is third in the league for points per game, averaging 18.4 for the season. Courtney Deemter (third year, Bachelor of Nursing, Calgary) is shooting 40.4 per cent from the field for the Kodiaks.

The Kodiaks men's basketball team looks to build off the momentum from last Saturday’s win against the SAIT Trojans as they head north this weekend. The Kodiaks are tied for third place with the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings with 22 points. The Kodiaks have made an impressive second semester push, going 8-2 in their last 10 games, earning themselves a 14th place CCAA ranking.
Ty Lewis (second year, Open Studies, Cardston) has played a big role since coming back to the Kodiaks at the Christmas break. He was a key player in the weekend split with the Trojans. Lewis is shooting 49.1 per cent from the field. Declan Peterson (second year, Business Administration, Bentley, Alta.) is sixth in the league with 10.2 rebounds per game. He leads the league in field goal percentage with 62.9 per cent.

Building off the momentum from their 7-3 win over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers last Saturday, the team will look to bring that energy to Prairie College. Right back Megan Morrison (third year, Bachelor of Nursing, Medicine Hat) has proven to be an offensive force for the Kodiaks this season.

The men look to improve their record this weekend in a series of four games at Prairie College. This is the last weekend of play before the top three teams from both divisions meet at championships.
Kodiaks look to regain momentum after last weekend’s 4-3 loss to the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. Vincent Dyck (third year, Business Administration, Lethbridge) has been a key veteran player for the Kodiaks this season with timely goals and big plays.

After a successful first weekend of the season, the Kodiaks have a lot to look forward to as they head into their second Grand Prix, hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic at the Gary W. Harris Center.
The women’s 4x200m relay team had great success in Grand Prix #1 with a second-place finish. Katrina Michel (first year, Practical Nurse, Okotoks) dominated the cross-country field in the fall and fans can expect to see her continue to dominate in Indoor Track in the 600m.
The men’s 4x200m relay team was successful with a first-place finish in Grand Prix #1 and look to improve on their 1:37.82 time. Gunnar Gibb (third year, Exercise Science, Cardston) will be the one to watch in the 300m and 60m events.
