Weekend Recap: Thankful for a soccer filled weekend
Kodiaks soccer was on the road over the thanksgiving weekend.
Oct. 10, 2023 - Kodiaks soccer was on the road over the thanksgiving weekend, Saturday at Olds College where the women’s team found themselves once again victorious and the men’s team ending the match in a draw. The next day the teams travelled to Red Deer with the women’s team continuing their winning streak, and the men losing a hard-fought battle by one goal.
Looking ahead to this coming weekend, the Kodiaks cross country teams are back on the track Saturday competing in the Grand Prix event hosted by U of A – Augustana. The Soccer squads are set to host the Ambrose Lions Saturday afternoon before heading to SAIT on Sunday.
Oct. 7 WSOC | Kodiaks 6 at OC Broncos 0
The nationally ranked third spot Kodiaks faced off against the Olds College Broncos on Saturday. The Kodiaks applied significant pressure early in the match that had Nikki Stahl (fifth year, Unit Clerk, Lethbridge) scoring in the 28th minute to start the charge for the team. This was quickly followed by Montanna Rousselle’s (second year, General Studies – English, Cranbrook, BC) goal and Kyra Piekema (first year, General Studies, Lethbridge) ending the first half, adding to the score putting the Kodiaks up 3-0.
The Kodiaks did not let off the gas in the second half. Goals from Raeleen Vanden Dungen (fifth year, Early Childhood Education, Vauxhall) and another from Piekema expanded the Kodiaks lead. Jordy Wright (first year, Nursing bachelor’s degree, Calgary), who entered as a second-half substitute, completed the scoring in the 62nd minute. The Kodiaks won the game 6-0 over the Broncos.

Oct. 8 WSOC | Kodiaks 3 at RDP Queens 1
The Kodiaks matched up against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens on Sunday. The Kodiaks took an aggressive approach at the start of the match by launching an on slot of shots on net. Kenley Matishak (second year, Academic Upgrading, Calgary) passed the ball to Rousselle who put one away high over the Queens keeper to end the first half with a 1-0 lead.
Pressure from the Kodiaks continued building in the second half. Taylor Hyrcun (fifth year, General Studies, Edmonton) added to their lead from a free kick taken just outside the 18-yard box. A late turnover in the Queens end provided Vanden Dungen with a scoring opportunity of her own. The Kodiaks ended the game 3-1 over the Queens.

Oct. 7 MSOC | Kodiaks 5 at OC Broncos 5
The Kodiaks men took on the Olds College Broncos at Richardson Pioneer Field in Olds on Saturday. Jaxon Uhl (second year, General Studies – English, Lethbridge) got the goal scoring rolling for the Kodiaks with their first goal at the 16th minute mark as he headed in a free kick. It was back-and-forth in the first half but an only goal by the Broncos ended the first half with the Kodiaks up 2-1 going into the second.
The scrappy play continued in the second half with goals from Joel McLeod (second year, Business Operations, Medicine Hat) and Ben Knight (fifth year, General Studies, Manchester, England). The Kodiaks found themselves down one late in the match but in added time Brandon Francis (second year, Exercise Science, Lethbridge) put one past the Broncos goalkeeper to end the match in a 5-5 draw.

Oct. 8 MSOC | Kodiaks 0 at RDP Kings 1
It was a traditional south divisional matchup between the Kodiaks and the Kings on Sunday. Both teams traded goal-scoring opportunities from one end of the pitch to the other, yet neither managed to find the back of the net. Kodiaks goalkeeper Trey Lukye (third year, Criminal Justice - Policing, Duchess, Alta.) made three impressive saves keeping the match scoreless in the first half.
Exchanging plays continued throughout the second half until the Kings managed to get a break and score late in the second half to take the lead. The Kodiaks could not break through the Kings defence with the game ending 1-0 in favour of the Kings.
