Weekend Recap: Cross Country puts Championship Course to the test while soccer squares off as the last of the undefeated teams
The Kodiaks had a thrilling weekend hosting both an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Cross-Country Grand Prix event and soccer matches.
Oct. 2, 2023 – The Kodiaks had a thrilling weekend hosting both an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Cross-Country Grand Prix event and soccer matches.
Kodiaks cross-country had their Running Room Grand Prix #3 at Nicholas Sheran Park. Both the men’s and women’s teams had good showings at the race and finished third overall.
on Saturday, the Kodiaks soccer teams battled the only other undefeated teams in the south division, SAIT Trojans. The women earned a 2-0 victory over the Trojans to remain undefeated in ACAC south division play, where the men’s team fell short in their match up.
Up next the Kodiaks soccer teams hit the road as they travel to Olds College and Red Deer Polytechnic this weekend.
Sept. 30 CC | Grand Prix #3 hosted by Lethbridge College at Nicholas Sheran Park
The cold, wind and rainy weather conditions didn’t stop the fun at the Running Room Grand Prix #3, both the Kodiaks men’s and women’s team finished third overall in their divisions.
For the women Katrina Michel (first year, Practical Nursing, Okotoks) was the first of the Kodiaks to cross the finish line with a time of 26:29 earning a fifth-place finish. Owen Stewart (second year, General Studies, Lethbridge) led the Kodiaks in the men’s race with a time of 28:40 finishing seventh place overall.

Both the Kodiaks and Trojans went into the match undefeated and leading the ACAC south division. Both teams battled hard while braving the frigid temperatures and rain. In the first half of the game both teams exchanged possession up and down the field each with shots on net followed by outstanding saves ending the first half with the score of 0-0.
In the second half, the back and forth play continued until the 66th minute when Kodiaks Kenley Matischak (second year, Academic Upgrading, Calgary) was able to put one past the SAIT keeper. This gave the Kodiaks a renewed energy late in the game that resulted in the game winning goal from Matischak ending it with a final score of 2-0 for the Kodiaks.

Sept. 30 MSOC | Kodiaks 0 vs SAIT Trojans 7
The Kodiaks and the Trojans faced off as the last two undefeated teams in the ACAC for men’s soccer. Both teams started out with high energy before the Trojans scored from beyond the 18-yard box to get the on the board early. The Trojans would tack on another goal later in the half putting the Trojans up two at halftime.
The Trojans continued to control the match in the second half, adding another 5 goals to the board. The Kodiaks fought back until the bitter end but were ultimately defeated by the Trojans with a final score of 7-0.
