Weekend Preview: Basketball tips off, Cross-Country wraps up, and Soccer faces rivals
The Kodiaks are turning the page this weekend as some sports are starting to wrap up and other just getting started.
Oct. 13, 2023 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks are turning the page this weekend as some sports are starting to wrap up and other just getting started.
The Cross-country teams are finishing out their regular season by travelling to Camrose to compete in the fourth Grand Prix event, which is hosted by the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.
Basketball officially starts its regular season play this weekend. On Saturday, both Kodiaks men’s and women’s teams travel to play the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. The game will be streamed live on ACACTV.ca or Telus Optik Ch. 1998.
Also on Saturday, the men’s and women’s soccer teams continues their regular season by hosting the Ambrose University Lions. On Sunday, they travel to Calgary to take on the SAIT Trojans.
Men’s and Women’s Cross-country Running

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams are competing in their last Grand Prix before the ACAC cross-country championships. Both teams have finished in the top three at all the competitions so far this season.
The Kodiaks have put in the work this fall and the results are showing. Both Drew Armener (first year, General Studies, Raymond) Kate Block (first year, Exercise Science, Waldheim, Sask.) have shredded over a minute off their times over the last two races.
Basketball
Kodiaks vs University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings
· Saturday, Oct. 14 | Women play at 6 p.m., Men play at 8 p.m.
ACAC Basketball is back in action this weekend. The Kodiaks men’s and women’s teams have been dedicated in their training in the off season and are excited to show case their results.
Last season left both Kodiaks teams wanting more. The men’s team finished with bronze medals in the ACAC and a desire to come back stronger this year. The women’s team hosted championships and have a chance of doing it again in this year’s postseason breakdown.
Last year’s rookies are this year’s leaders. Women’s basketball student-athlete Kitawna Sparks (second year, Business Administration, Taber), was received the ACAC women’s basketball rookie of the year award and was named as a second team all-conference player. She is expected to take on a leadership role this season. The men’s team only has six returners including Filip Karanovic (third year, General Studies Psychology Sociology, Herceg Novic, Montenegro), who was named as a second team all-conference player last year.

Women’s soccer
Kodiaks (8-0-0) vs Ambrose University Lions (0-9-0)

· Sunday, Oct. 15 | 1 p.m.
The Kodiaks women’s soccer team is hoping to take the number one spot in the ACAC south division after this weekend’s games. They are currently ranked third in the CCAA national rankings.
Raeleen Vanden Dungen (fifth year, Early Childhood Education, Vauxhall) has had a fast start to the beginning of the season. She is in the ACAC’s top three for goals, points, shots and was recently named the Moxie’s Kodiaks Student-Athlete of the Month. Kyra Piekema (first year, General Studies, Lethbridge) is coming off a good week of play being named Kodiaks Student-Athlete of the Month with a recognition of ACAC player of the game against Olds College with two goals and two assists.
Men’s soccer

· Sunday, Oct. 15 | 3 p.m.
Men’s soccer is looking to get some positive momentum during this weekend’s games. They currently hold the second place slot in the ACAC south division with two weekends of regular season left to play.
Ben Knight (fifth year, General Studies, Manchester, England) has started to pick up the intensity in his last games against Olds College Broncos and Red Deer Polytechnic Queens. He earned Kodiaks athlete of the week after picking up an ACAC player of the game recognition with one goal and two assists.
